Active lifestyle appears as beneficial as structured exercise

Physical activity is encouraged to enhance quality of life and improve or prevent chronic disease. However, recent study data suggest that small increments of physical activity that add up to 30 minutes per day are just as beneficial as a more structured workout. “Our results suggest that engaging in an active lifestyle approach, compared to a structured exercise approach, may be just as beneficial in improving various health outcomes,” researcher Paul D. Loprinzi, PhD, assistant professor in the department of exercise science at Bellarmine University, and Donna & Allan Lansing School of Nursing & Health Sciences in Louisville, Ky., said in a press release. “We encourage people to seek out opportunities to be active when the choice is available. For example, rather than sitting while talking on the phone, use this opportunity to get in some activity by pacing around while talking.”
